If you are looking for sports car performance in an SUV body, then look no further than the wonderfully brutish BMW X5 M. BMW took the powertrain from their BMW M5 and transplanted it into the X5 body shell resulting in one of the fastest SUV’s in the world.
Being the top of the range X5, it comes with plenty of expensive equipment as standard ensuring this is a luxurious place to be. Couple this with great practicality and a surprisingly engaging drive, the X5 M might just represent the best value on this list of luxury SUVs.
#8 Land Rover Defender
An icon for over 68 years, the Land Rover Defender’s production ceased in January 2016 with more than two million Defenders made since the original series 1 production began in 1948. Although not technically a luxury SUV we had to include it on our list as there is no better winter 4×4 with such fantastic off road abilities.
Available in a 90 and 110 wheelbase and in various body styles we tend to have in stock the special editions which include the Autobiography, Heritage and Adventure but quite possibly the one to have is the recently launched Defender Works V8 70th Edition which for the first time comes with a monstrous 5.0 litre naturally aspirated V8 engine.
#7 Rolls-Royce Cullinan
Named after the Cullinan Diamond which is the largest uncut Diamond ever discovered; the Rolls Royce Cullinan is the brands first SUV that promises to redefine the luxury SUV sector. It marks a brand-new era for the British brand, being the first ever Rolls-Royce to have a four-wheel drive system. Designed for customers who love their Rolls-Royce but want a car that is more versatile and usable on a daily basis; the Cullinan was designed to fulfil all of these needs. A truly gargantuan car which is powered by the same 6.75L twin-turbocharged V12 from the Phantom the Cullinan drives all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox that intelligently selects gears based on the satellite navigation’s mapping of the road ahead.
With prices starting from £250,000, you can spec the Cullinan as a four-seater with two individual reclining rear seats backed by a glass partition to the luggage bay to reduce any road noise. You can also specify a fridge and humidor between the seats in the centre armrest for your champagne and cigars, should you wish. The Cullinan really is the ultimate luxury SUV and although at the time of writing we are still yet to see one on the UK market we no doubt look forward to having one in stock very soon.
#6 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
The original benchmark for performance 4x4s, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo arguably redefined this sector when it was launched back in 2002. Upon its release, it became Porsche’s bestselling model, elevating this German manufacturer to become the most profitable automotive car maker in the world. It cemented Porsche’s recipe of sports car driving dynamics wrapped in an SUV body.
16 years after its debut, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo is still considered one of the ultimate performance SUVs. Now in its third generation, the Cayenne Turbo has a new 4 litre twin-turbo V8, offering even more power and torque, a new gearbox and is lighter than ever ensuring it as one of the fastest and most capable luxury SUVs on the market.

Open the doors and the Bentayga’s cabin exudes sophistication and craftsmanship, with sumptuous soft leather and beautifully finished materials. With various personalisation options the Bentayga truly is one of the most luxurious SUVs on the market.
#4 Range Rover Sport SVR
Nothing is more unapologetic than the SVR’s sizzling V8 soundtrack and we absolutely adore this car for it. With every other SUV manufacturer going for emission friendly turbo charged engines, there is something refreshing about Land Rover’s approach to continue building brutish supercharged V8’s for the SVR that can be heard from a mile away. Land Rover recently launched the facelift SVR that features a host of new technology and upgrades with the most eye catching feature the new aggressive air vents which are amplified when specified with the exposed carbon fibre bonnet.
As well as new front sports seats which are 30kg lighter than before, there is a new active exhaust. whilst power and torque have been increased the chassis and suspension have been revised to ensure the car corners flatter and faster than ever before. Overall, the SVR is a fantastically unhinged SUV with a huge character thanks to its unruly engine and there is no surprise it has been of Romans very best selling cars of 2018.
#3 Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic
The current king of the Range Rover family, the SVAutobiography Dynamic epitomises everything we love about this British marque. Nothing exudes class, style and luxury like the SVAutobiography Dynamic being the flagship model in the line-up. Powered by the same supercharged V8 as the astonishing SVR, the SVAutobiography Dynamic combines an outstanding level of power with incredible handling and agility for such a large vehicle.
Being the first facelift since the introduction of the fourth generation Range Rover in 2012, the car features plenty of new updates from the new front grille, headlights, taillights, dual screen infotainment, 24 way electrically adjustable seats, rear executive class with electrically deployable central armrest, 4G WiFi hotspot for 8 devices and more. #2 Mercedes-AMG G63
Don’t be fooled when you see the new G63 AMG and think it’s just a facelift G-Wagon with some new headlights. This truly is the rebirth of an icon, a brand-new car from the ground up with only six components carried over from its predecessor. The list of changes include a fully redesigned ladder frame chassis, longer and wider body, new suspension, off-road system, 9 speed automatic gearbox and a brand new 577 bhp twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8.
Fundamentally, Mercedes-Benz have kept in mind features that made the G63 so popular like the side exhaust pipes, the boxy design, bonnet mounted indicators and the retro door handles. Every time you close the door, you hear this hugely satisfying thud which perfectly emphasises its utilitarian charm.
Step inside the brand-new interior and you immediately notice the wonderful S Class derived 12.3” dual TFT screens, one for the instrument binnacle and one for the COMAND Online and infotainment system. In addition, the brand-new seats as well as the new centre console are welcome luxury upgrades. Overall, this new G-Class is definitely a step above the old G63, with much improved driving dynamics and interior quality making this car a true rival to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Range Rover SVA & SVR.
#1 Lamborghini Urus
Lamborghini created the super sports SUV sector with the famous LM002 between 1986 and 1993 which was a utilitarian based off-roader with a whopping V12 engine. Officially the World’s Fastest SUV thanks to a staggering 190 mph top speed, the Urus is powered by a 4-litre twin turbo charged V8 producing 641 bhp and 627 lb ft of torque. More impressively, the 2.2 tonne Urus can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds.
Plenty of new technology is also available from the rear wheel steering carried over from the Aventador S, active anti-roll bars, adaptive air suspension, ceramic brakes and more. In the cabin, you immediately notice the Y designed dashboard oriented towards the driver and various hexagonal design elements including the cupholders and air vents. The Urus features a fully customisable TFT driver information display and the very latest infotainment system.
