Model Overview
A replacement for the much more expensive SLR McLaren the SLS AMG has been one of Mercedes most celebrated modern cars. First arriving for sale in 2010 the SLS has proven a real success with it’s distinctive styling accentuated by those famous gullwing doors inspired from the 1950s 300 SL. In fact, the SLS was the first Mercedes-Benz to be exclusively designed in house by AMG.
What makes the SLS a truly special car is that it provides a hugely engaging and exciting driving experience. The 6.3L AMG V8 is regarded as one of the best engines around being both hugely responsive and sounding magnificent whilst the dual clutch AMG speedshift transmission ensures gear changes are super smooth. The SLS really inspires confidence behind the wheel with superb performance and handling but is also a comfortable cruiser when you need it to be making it a great all-round supercar.
The SLS has not been built in large numbers and is being discontinued in 2014 - in the long term this should ensure that it becomes a future classic with the very best examples sure to prove a wise investment. Despite lacking the drama of the gullwing doors the SLS Roadster is a stunning looking car and is considered one of the best convertible sports cars for sale in recent times.
There are a few special editions of the SLS worth mentioning - you’ve got the extreme SLS AMG Black Series, currently the most powerful production road car Mercedes have ever built. The SLS AMG Electric Drive is powered by 4 electric motors and went on sale as the most expensive Mercedes of all time. Finally the SLS AMG GT Final Edition goes for sale in 2014 as the swansong and last chapter in the SLS production cycle. The final edition features a host of carbon fibre extras including a carbon bonnet and is limited to just 350 units worldwide.
