The much-anticipated new G-Class is finally here and it certainly has been worth the wait. This is not just a facelift or an engine change but the first time since it’s conception in the late 1970’s that the G-Class has been fully re-engineered from the ground up. To start with an updated ladder frame chassis helps to reduce overall weight whilst increasing stiffness and strength. The suspension and off-road system have been totally redesigned and now give a much more sure-footed handling experience, especially on the road in faster corners. And those corners will certainly be coming faster as under the bonnet lies the same 4.0L twin-turbo V8 found in the range topping AMG GT-R packing 577bhp. Running through Mercedes’ new 9-speed gearbox and multiple locking diffs to all 4-wheels; this power, extra gearing and traction means the new G63 will rocket from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds and romp on to a top speed of 137mph (149mph with the AMG Driver’s pack). It is even capable of cutting 4 cylinders to return much more favourable mpg figures than the outgoing model, proving this car has the brains to match the brawn.
In terms of the exterior the new model is larger in every direction especially in width (nearly 5 inches) giving it a much more planted stance. This has helped with rear seat leg room, increased ground clearance and a deeper wading depth. In terms of exterior styling all the iconic features remain including the boxy shape, bonnet mounted indicators, exposed hinges and side exit exhaust, which continue to give this 4x4 a unique style and utilitarian charm. The new ingenious MULTIBEAM LED headlights are capable of recognising oncoming traffic and dipping the beam only for those sections, leaving the rest of the road fully lit, effectively allowing for constant high-beam use. Step inside using the retro door handles and stainless-steel runner boards, shutting the door with that satisfyingly solid clunk, and experience a vastly superior interior. Centre stage are two massive 12.3” screens, one for the instrument binnacle and one for the infotainment and COMMAND online system. Now sharing buttons and features with the S-class the interior has really been stepped up a level and completes a rather well sorted version of the new G-Class. Overall the new G-Class has upped it’s game in some key areas which include cabin quality and handling making it a real rival to the likes of the Range Rover Sport SVR & Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
