To celebrate the 50-year milestone of BMW M, the motor company released the special edition M4 Competition Sport Leichtbau (Competition Sport Lightweight). This is the first CSL model since the renowned E46 M3 CSL which has asserted itself as one of, if not the best M car to roll off the production line, a car that has embedded itself in BMW’s illustrious history. The question is could this reputation be in the pipeline for the M4 CSL?

The lightweight concept that is part of the CSL DNA is present here with the use of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic constituting to a large part of the M4 CSL’s design. This mixed with other lightweight materials achieves a weight saving of around 100kg compared to the M4 Competition. The carbon fibre bonnet is accented with red stripes on both sides which the red stripes extending to the carbon roof. Within those stripes are the unpainted exposed carbon fibre on show. Weight has also been shed by M Carbon Fibre Racing Bucket Seats, utilising titanium exhaust silencers, lighter soundproofing and the removal of rear seats. The inline 6-cylinder engine has had the power dialled up from 503bhp to 543bhp. Combining the power increase with the weight reduction is a recipe for a well-balanced high-performing coupe for any manufacturer. This is proven at the Nürburgring with the car achieving a time of 7:20.207 – the fastest time ever produced by a BMW production vehicle. BMW M have been in the performance game for over 50-years, so with this recipe in addition to BMW's motorsport know-how, the CSL is certainly heading towards leaving its mark at this milestone for BMW. With only 1,000 cars produced worldwide, this 50-year celebratory model is on track to becoming an icon, much like its CSL predecessor.
