The Audi e-Tron represents the brand’s first foray into the all-electric market, although the VW Group has been involved in this technology for many years now which stands the car in good stead. Styling was meant to be and is deliberately textbook Audi, in fact if it weren’t for the Virtual Mirrors, which feature on all but the base models, you could be forgiven for thinking this was a conventionally powered car. Camera mirrors, or as Audi call them Virtual Exterior Mirrors, have been teased on concept cars for many years but never seem to quite make it to the production model. The image from the cameras is displayed on the door card just under where the mirrors would sit and can be enhanced at night to give a clearer image. Advantages of this system are reduced aerodynamic drag and thus increased range and a significant reduction in wind noise. The e-Tron is powered by two electric motors, one on each axle, driving all 4 wheels. With a combined power of 300 kW in ‘Boost Mode’ the e-Tron is able to rocket from 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds and propels this luxury SUV on to a top speed of 124mph. Overall, the e-Tron presents itself as a viable alternative to other EVs on the market from a German brand with style, technology and innovation in abundance.
