The first Audi RS model ever produced was the Audi RS2 Avant in 1994, this was a joint venture between Porsche and Audi AG to produce a faster and more performance orientated version of a 5-seater estate-bodied car. Porsche coaxed 315hp from the 5-cylinder turbocharged engine and then uprated the suspension, whilst also giving the RS2 the brakes, wheels and door mirrors from a 964 Turbo. This ‘RS’ formula, which stands for ‘RennSport’ (literally translating as ‘Race Sport’), has proved a great success story for Audi, taking the fight to the Mercedes AMG and BMW M-Sport divisions and in some cases out-gunning them all together.
In keeping with the engine configuration of its great grandfather the new Audi RS3 Saloon also uses a turbocharged 5-pot engine, which in this iteration produces a whopping 395bhp, beating its German rivals the BMW M2 and the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 to the post. Typically aggressive ‘RS’ styling comes as standard, including the outrageous ‘DTM-esque’ front and rear splitters and large oval tailpipes synonymous with this epic brand. A much-revised version of the 4-wheel drive system, developed in the 1982 & 1983 Rally winning Audi Quattro, features in this car, shuffling the power around to the wheel with most grip and giving the driver the confidence to push this car even on the wettest British B-road. The cabin quality, practicality and driver assistance aids combined with one of the best sounding turbocharged exhaust notes on the market, make the RS3 Saloon one of the most universally admired small performance cars in recent memory.
