Audi’s first transition into the supercar market established the R8 as a serious contender to rival the long-established Porsche 911 and is rightly stated by some experts as one of the finest sports cars ever made.
The R8 was created by Audi AG’s high performance quattro GmbH division now renowned for creating all the RS models and originally went for sale in 2007. By using an all aluminium chassis based on the Lamborghini Gallardo combining German efficiency with stunning Italian looks Audi created a masterful sports car that is fluid, comfortable and consistently brilliant to drive.
Initially the R8 was powered by a 4.2L V8 engine with an optional transmission of manual or a semi-automatic R-Tronic gearbox. A more powerful model adopting the V10 engine from the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 followed in 2009 along with convertible ‘Spyder’ models for both the V8 and V10 as well as a limited edition GT version. The car has been updated further since then with the dual clutch S-Tronic gearbox and an extra powerful V10 Plus version keeping the car fresh and relevant.
The R8 is a real driver’s car that has great everyday usability with the Quattro 4-wheel drive system, fantastic handling and with plenty of power especially with the V10 which is a real favourite of Romans customers and a model we are always looking to buy and sell.
