The new Defender was arguably the most anticipated car of 2020, bringing the Defender into the modern era by applying the latest technology available from Land Rover. The upgrades are instantly apparent. From its modern edgy styling to the series of onboard computers and stability systems, the new Defender is without a doubt a change for the better. Incorporating computers into everything the Defender does makes for a much more refined driver experience over the previous analogue drive. The long suspension travel provides a soft and gentle ride, absorbing any imperfection in the terrain beneath it. Although it shows good on-road compliance, it is just as impressive off-road, easily navigating through any terrain with the clever Dynamic Stability Control and all-wheel drive system.
This particular example features the P400e plug-in electric hybrid engine which can run in a purely electric mode for short trips producing zero tailpipe emissions, being music to environmentalists’ ears. The electric and petrol systems can work separately or together whilst using regenerative braking or a plug-in charger to top up the battery. Together they produce nearly 400hp, meaning despite the extra weight of the battery technology the P400e is no slouch. The new Defender has truly been redefined, whilst still demonstrating the original purpose of what the Land Rover Defender was originally designed to achieve.
The X-Dynamic HSE example is not short on spec either. Included as standard are useful and convenient features such as heated and cooled front seats and a 3D surround camera.

WHAT THE JOURNALISTS SAY
- In today’s world, it’s massively capable, hugely comfortable, a fantastic piece of design and a joy to live with. It’s the sort of car you can do absolutely anything with, in any place, and it’ll always leave you smiling. It did us.
- Meanwhile, not too many cars ride this well (air springs are standard), and certainly not while hanging onto their body movements so capably. With a slowish and extremely accurate steering set-up, it’s much more easy to place than its dimensions would suggest, too.
- The additional weight hasn’t changed the Defender’s sweet handling characteristics one bit, from our time with it. The steering is remarkably direct for such a large, hefty vehicle.
