The Veneno Roadster – No One Does Extreme Quite Like Lamborghini
A company renowned for pushing the limits of conventional design, Lamborghini has long stood proudly among the most respected of luxury automotive marques. From the trendy Miura of the 60s, to the striking Gallardo and Murciélago of the new millennium, they are famous for harnessing the power of the raging bull to offer the world’s finest driving experiences.
Their latest offering takes luxury and performance to an all-new level, with the Venono Roadster offering a cocktail of blistering speed and futuristic bodywork to pose as the perfect poster-car for petrol heads.
Under the hood you will find the same naturally aspirated 6.5L V12 engine, hammering out a mouth-watering 740bhp when firing on all cylinders and topping out at 221mph. It’s no slouch off the start line either; in fact it explodes out of the blocks and reaches 62mph within 2.9 seconds. In terms of the bodywork, its stand-out features include the four large exhaust pipes – clear signs that the Veneno Roadster is built for speed.
While many will be keen to get behind the wheel of the open-top sibling of the Veneno, its limited production run of just nine vehicles makes the prospect of owning one almost impossibly difficult. There’s also the price to consider, with motorists having to part with around £2.8million before tax to drive one away from the dealership.
This is far from being the first limited edition model created by the Italian marque – it is, in fact, one of a long list which has eluded vehicle collectors for many years. Although models like the Islero, Jarama and the Silhouette were all produced in relatively short supply, the first real limited edition model arrived on the roads in 2008 in the form of the Reventón.
The Reventón is a modified version of the celebrated Murciélago, featuring outlandish bodywork inspired by airplanes and with a fearsome engine to match; it’s no surprise that many people were keen to do almost anything to get their hands on a model. Most of these attempts were always going to be more of a hope than a reality, though, as just 20 models of the vehicle were produced, each featuring an edition number stamped between the driver and passenger seats.
Becoming a member of the Reventón club came at quite a price, with the price tag of £840,000 making it the most expensive Lamborghini road car ever until the arrival of the aforementioned Veneno. Prospective owners were given a second chance when the Reventón Roadster made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009. However, with just nine versions of the model ever reaching the market, it remains among the rarest modern supercars in the world.
In even shorter supply is the Lamborghini Aventador J, a striking and wacky version of the conventional Aventador which comes roofless and without windows. Designed purely for speed, the interior was stripped back to the basics and is without radio or air conditioning, which helps to reduce the overall weight to just 1,575kg. Having been revealed to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012, only one unit was ever produced, which was subsequently sold for £2.8 million – a fairly reasonable price for owning such an important piece of automotive history.
Finally, the conventional Veneno is certainly worth a mention. A vehicle which stands as a celebration of Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary, its appearance alone is enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. While the prototype – Car Zero – is to be retained by the firm and will take pride of place in its museum, three production cars were also created: one green, white and red example each to represent the Italian flag. The trio have already been sold, at the price of over €3 million – becoming the world’s expensive road cars in the process.
