Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing sells for record 2.95 million pounds at acution

Last week saw a very rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, which was only one of 29 built with alloy bodies, sell at action for an astounding £2.95 million (or $4,620,000), at the annual Gooding & Company Scottsdale auction of luxury cars in Arizona.

The pre-auction estimates were from $3.4 million to $3.8 million, so the final selling price left onlookers gobsmacked. This is a new record for a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, but this rare alloy bodied version is in pristine condition and commanded a top price.

The 300SL was a road car based on the racer that won the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1952, and the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing was built between 1954 and 1957, with a total of 1400 standard steel Gullwings produced, along with the ultra-rare ‘alloy’ bodied cars. In recent years, the Mercedes Gullwing cars have seen auction prices rising dramatically, but this is exceptional.
