Mercedes refers to the GLS as ‘the S-Class of SUVs’ as it adopts the luxury and prestige of the beloved S-Class, packaged in a more practical and spacious alternative. As the largest SUV that Mercedes offers and considering the kerb weight of over 2,500kg, the GLS 63 has some pretty staggering stats - with perhaps the most surprising being the 0-62mph time of just 4.2 seconds.

The GLS 63 packs the most punch of all the GLS variants, featuring the 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine commonly found in performance Mercedes models. It utilises AMG’s Speedshift TCT 9G transmission and with the engine producing 612bhp, it’s no surprise that this is one fast SUV.

The design of the GLS compliments its performance well, with an ultra-aggressive and sporty front end, AMG wheels and a quad exit exhaust to accentuate the roar of the V8. However, with this being a large SUV, it’s evident that Mercedes have prioritised practicality as there is a clear focus on a spacious interior. A third row of seats is also available to allow the whole family to travel in true AMG style.

Maybach have also applied their treatment to the GLS, with two options available from Mercedes themselves. While its performance doesn’t match that of the 63, the interior luxury reaches new levels in comparison. Ultra-high-quality leathers and various luxury materials flow throughout the updated cabin, in addition to multiple exterior design changes. A larger chrome grille, redesigned lower front air vents, redesigned lightweight alloys and chrome window trim have all been applied to the Maybach GLS, which evidently screams luxury and prestige.

Overall, the GLS lives up to expectations as the “daddy” of Mercedes SUVs, with various engines and trim levels available, whether you’re in the market for high end luxury or brute performance.
