The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S was introduced in late 2017, with deliveries hitting UK roads in early spring 2018. This is now the range topping, full-blooded GLC, replacing the GLC 43 as top dog in this class. This Affalterbach born midsized SUV pits itself against the likes of Porche’s Macan Turbo and the BMW X3 M40i. In order to deal with these rivals the clever Germans at AMG have compiled what appears to be a greatest hits of all the best AMG systems we have come to know and love. Starting with the 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 from the AMG GT series in a leisurely state of tune, kicking out a respectable 503bhp. When combined with the 4Matic system and the short-shifting 9-speed MCT, which originally appeared in the E 63, the GLC 63 S is capable of some astonishing acceleration figures dealing with 60mph in just 3.8 seconds!
Higher, beefier versions of the C 63’s four-link suspension at the front and the E 63’s multi-link set-up at the rear combined with the Air Body Control system give the car highly adaptable handling characteristics in it’s different modes. Some clever electromechanical clutches and differentials mean the car is capably setup for rough terrains as well as shredding rubber when required. All this performance is beautifully accentuated by that thunderously raucous V8 soundtrack and then wrapped up with some beautifully appointed driver aids, styling and cabin quality, which we have come to expect from this esteemed German car brand. Overall the GLC 63 S places itself well in the mix with the mid-size performance SUVs and looks like the one to beat in terms of outright speed and performance handling.
