Maserati has a history of naming its cars after different winds from around the world, such as the Bora or the Shamal from yesteryear. The Ghibli is no different; being a hot, dry southerly wind found in North Africa, however this is not a new name for the brand. Infact this is the third time Maserati have used this name on a road car since 1966, when it was bestowed on one of Maserati’s greatest ever road cars designed to compete with the Lamborghini Miura and the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona. This modern incarnation of the Ghibli is arguably one of the most important cars in Maserati’s history as it has been partially responsible for the company’s crucial upturn in sales and popularity.
As with most Maserati’s the Ghibli is certainly a good-looking car, sitting on a slightly smaller Quattroporte chassis it takes styling cues from its older sibling but looks like more of a 4-door coupe than full on saloon car. Power comes from a Ferrari derived 345bhp 3.0L twin-turbo V6, which supplies more than enough oomph to make this car a capable overtaking machine. The interior oozes quality with solid materials, whilst providing generous head and leg room for four adults with a boot to match. The GranLusso trim level provides a host of aesthetic and functional upgrades, highlights of which include; Full-LED Adaptive Matrix Headlights, body-coloured bumpers & Ermenegildo Zegna silk interior inserts. Overall the Ghibli has brought Maserati back into the 21st century again by providing a car which sits in a sweet spot between practicality, luxury and Italian style.
