To mark 50 years of BMW M, the brand released the M4 Competition Sport Leichtbau (CSL) - the first CSL model since the legendary E46 M3 CSL, widely regarded as one of the greatest M cars ever built. The question now is whether the M4 CSL can follow in its footsteps.

True to the CSL (Coupe Sport Lightweight) philosophy, the M4 CSL features extensive use of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic, helping shave around 100kg off the standard M4 Competition. This includes a carbon bonnet with distinctive red stripes that extend onto the roof, showcasing exposed carbon fibre beneath. Further weight savings come from M Carbon bucket seats, a titanium exhaust, reduced soundproofing, and the removal of the rear seats.

Power from the 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six has been increased from 503bhp to 543bhp, combining with the reduced weight to deliver a sharper, more focused driving experience. It’s a formula that works with the CSL setting a Nürburgring lap time of 7:20.207, the fastest ever for a BMW production car.

With just 1,000 units produced globally and 100 of these supplied to the UK, the M4 CSL is not just a celebration of BMW M’s legacy but a future classic in the making.
