Mercedes enter new territory with the AMG GT

  • Mercedes enter new territory with the AMG GT

Mercedes Benz have finally unveiled the AMG GT, a model which has been much anticipated by the motoring world for several months.

The second car developed entirely by AMG after the SLS it shares the same front engine, rear wheel drive 2 seater layout as the SLS, but AMG have developed a brand new 4.0L twin turbo engine and ditched the 6.2L naturally aspirated V8 that we love here Romans International.

In terms of power, the standard AMG GT offers 456bhp and can accelerate from 0-62mph in just four seconds, with a top speed of 189mph. However, Mercedes are offering an even faster version called the AMG GT S that has 503bhp and does 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 193mph.

The chassis is constructed from the same aluminium spaceframe as the SLS but the most notable difference is the new conventional doors that have replaced the SLS gullwing doors that was the cars unique selling point.

Selectable exhaust becomes a standard addition

The GT comes with a host of features to help enhance the road experience for both driver and passenger. Just one of these is the standard fitting of a selectable exhaust, featuring a variable exhaust flap to change the pitch of the V8 depending on the chosen mode of the Dynamic Select. With the SLS being one of our best selling cars here at Romans International the exhaust note was something that always excited our customers and has to be one of the best sounding engines out there. How the new 4.0L twin-turbo AMG GT engine will sound we will have to wait and see.

With an expected price of £100,000 this is verging on the being half the price of the SLS it replaces. This represents a clear change in strategy for the Mercedes flagship sports car as AMG aim to rival the hugely successful Porsche 911 steering away from the likes of the Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Huracan.

With the GT all set to grace luxury car forecourts across the UK in the first quarter of 2015 we can’t wait to see one in the showroom at Romans International. Although the news will have excited many in the motoring community, all eyes will now be transfixed on the Paris Motor Show in early October – the venue for the car’s official unveiling.
