Last week saw a classic 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO go under the hammer and sell for an absolutely staggering £20.2million, making it the most expensive car ever to be sold in the UK. It was sold by the Ascot-based auctioneer’s company Talacrest, who specialise in luxury cars.

The now legendary Ferrari 250 GTO is probably one of the world’s most sought after Ferraris, as only 39 were ever produced from 1962 – 1964. This particular 250 GTO was believed to be sold by a private English owner and was said to have been purchased by a buyer from Spain.

The Ferrari 250 GTO is powered by a 3.0-litre V12 engine producing 300hp, which sees this special Ferrari being able to achieve 0-60mph acceleration in 6.1 seconds with a top speed of 174mph. In retrospect, this is very impressive even by today’s standards for a car launched back in the early 1960s.

Incidentally, the suffix GTO stands for “Gran Turismo Omologata” (Grand Touring Homologated in English), referring to a homologated car used for racing.
