This highly prestige marque of the Bentley Motor Car Company is now a far cry from its humble beginnings. The company was founded and takes its name for its founder "Walter Owen Bentley" (or W.O. Bentley as he was often referred to). Walter Bentley founded the now famous motor company back in 1919, a year after World War 1 ended. Prior to this Walter was known for his "Rotary Aero-Engines" which were being using in military aircraft. His most notable engine was the Bentley BR1 and was the power unit behind the famous biplane, the Sopwith Camel.
It was in the early 1920's when the Bentley cars were entered into various racing events, such as hill climbs to display the full potential of the new Bentley motor car. It was also in this time period when Walter Bentley took his cars to the most famous and gruelling racing event in the world at that time, the "24 hours of Le Mans race".
A golden era was in the making and the start of a racing legend at the Le Mans 24 hour race, as during the twenties right up until the start of the 1930's the Bentley Motor Car company's cars raced and won no less than five outright wins, with four of them being consecutive victories. Which by any standards was an amazing achievement, especially considering that the company had only been created eleven years before.
The Bentley motor company has always moved with the times and always aimed to react to important trends, whilst pushing the boundaries of motoring in the process. Under the ownership of its parent company Volkswagen it's not a surprise to see Bentley making the headlines once again by setting a new "Guinness World Speed Record" on Ice, achieving a speed of 330.7kmh (205.48mph), which meant they actually smashed their own previous world record title, with the expert help of the four-times World Rally Champion "Juha Kankkunen".
The vehicle Juha Kankkunen was driving was the bio-ethanol-powered Bentley Continental Supersports convertible. That bar a few race spec modifications is based on essentially the same model you can buy from your local Bentley dealer.
