The Aston Martin luxury sports car brand is synonymous with British motor racing as well as being an iconic English sports car over many decades. The popularity and of the brand has been influenced by its racing heritage and for being the usual car of choice famously driven by the legendary big screen spy character 007, aka James Bond.
Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, the company name comes from name of one of the founders and from the Aston Hill speed hill climb near Aston Clinton, located in Buckinghamshire.
In the twenties the Aston Martin cars raced in the French Grand Prix, and the cars went on to set world speed and endurance records at Brooklands in England. It wasn't until the late 1940's when the Aston Martin company was sold to David Brown company, also that year David Brown limited also acquired the Lagonda Brand, predominately for their Bentley designed 2.6 litre engine.
At this stage the cars were given their legendary pre-fix of DB (abbreviated for David Brown). In this era that the Aston Martin marque was shaped into the well known prestigious hand crafted luxury sports car it is known as today. As in 1950 the company unveiled the DB2, which was then followed by the DB2/4 in 1953, after that the DB2/4 MkII followed in 1955, then the DB Mark III later in 1957 and then this was followed by the Italian-styled 3.7 L DB4 in 1958. It was in 1955 that the David Brown Company purchased the 'Tickford coach building company' and its operational base at Tickford Street in Newport Pagnell.
By this time all the cars had established an enviable racing pedigree for the firm, but the DB4 was the focus for establishing the company's reputation, which was later epitomised by the famous DB5 in 1963. Through the sixties and into the seventies the company continued developing the luxury "grand touring" style with the DB6 (1965'70), and then DBS (1967'1972).
Through the seventies and the 1980's a shift of ownership had been taking place on more than one occasion, it was in the eighties and the under the leadership of Victor Gauntlett who able to develop and sell the Aston Martin Lagonda into the highly lucrative Persian Gulf states. Also at this time Aston Martin created an engineering service subsidiary for their sister company Tickford, with the role of developing automotive products for many other well known companies. At the end of the 1980's saw the production of the DB7.
From the beginning of the 1990's saw the ownership and control by the Ford Motor Company, who substantially increased investment into the manufacturing and increased production output. At the end of the 90's the range was increased with the V12 Vantage model and in 2001 the company introduced the V12-engined Aston Martin Vanquish.
In 2003 saw other new models like the concept AM V8 Vantage (which was later released in 2005) and launch of the DB9 which was to replace the DB7. The following year Aston Martin introduced a convertible version called the DB9 Volante. In late 2003 was to announce it return to motor racing and the development of the DBR9 program, so a new division was set up called 'Aston Martin Racing' which was responsible for the design, development and management along with Prodrive the British motorsport and automotive engineering group.
After an investment review in 2006 Ford decided to sell of a portion of the Aston Martin brand, it was in 2007 which saw the successful bid by a consortium which was led by the Prodrive chairman David Richards. This brought certainty and stability to the Aston Martin marque once again, with the start of a new era.
