Ferrari 488 Pista Piloti in Nero Daytona

Here at Romans International, we've always had a soft spot for the Ferrari 488 Pista. It took the engine know-how from Ferrari's 488 Challenge race car and put it on the road, and it remains one of the sharpest mid-engined Ferraris of the modern era. But there is one version that even seasoned Pista owners rarely see in the metal: the Ferrari 488 Pista Piloti. As Tom Jaconelli puts it in the latest episode of our "If You Don't Know, Now You Know" series, "you have your regular 488 Pistas and you also have your Pistas that the collectors wait for." So without further ado, here are seven things you might not know about the Piloti.

Fact 1: You Had to Race for Ferrari to Buy a 488 Pista Piloti

The Tailor Made sill plate - Exclusively for Piloti Ferrari

Most limited-run Ferraris go to loyal collectors. The 488 Pista Piloti, or to give it its full name the 488 Pista Piloti Ferrari, went one step further. Ferrari revealed it in June 2018, the day before the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as a thank you to the clients who don't just buy its cars but race them, and it was offered exclusively to Ferrari's client racing drivers. In other words, being a good customer wasn't enough. You needed to have raced with Maranello before you could even ask. Open the door of this example and the carbon sill plate says it all: "tailor made - Exclusively for Piloti Ferrari".

Fact 2: The Livery Celebrates Ferrari's 2017 World Endurance Title

The FIA 2017 GT Manufacturers' World Endurance Champion laurel on the bonnet

The first thing you notice is the paintwork, and that is entirely the point. The livery is inspired by the Ferrari 488 GTE race car that won the GT Manufacturers' title in the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship, and the Piloti wears that success proudly. Look down at the bonnet and you'll find the FIA laurel itself, reading "GT Manufacturers' World Endurance Champion - Ferrari 2017". The tricolore stripe runs from the nose, over the bonnet and across the roof, which is about as subtle as a Pista gets. Which is to say, not subtle at all!

Fact 3: Every Stripe on the 488 Pista Piloti Is Hand-Painted

Here's the detail that catches most people out. "All of this, by the way, is hand painted. There are no decals," says Tom. The livery runs the whole way across the roof, onto the rear spoiler and down the lower sides of the car, ending with the owner's individual racing number. Ferrari let each Piloti owner choose their own number, which is why no two cars are quite alike. On this car that number is 79, painted on both doors in crisp white against the Nero Daytona bodywork, with the tricolore running along the sills beneath it.

Fact 4: The Racing Number Is Painted on the Steering Wheel Too

Title: ferrari-488-pista-piloti-steering-wheel-racing-number-79 - Description: Ferrari 488 Pista Piloti carbon steering wheel with racing number 79 painted beneath the Engine Start button

The same number, painted on the steering wheel

Ferrari didn't stop at the bodywork. "You get that same number actually painted on your steering wheel," Tom points out, and sure enough, a white 79 sits on the carbon lower section of the wheel, just beneath the Engine Start button. It's the sort of touch you would normally only find in a race car, and it means the owner is reminded of their number every single time they climb in. Hard to forget whose car it is, really.

Fact 5: Matte Carbon and Tricolore Details Fill the Cabin

Inside, the Piloti takes a slightly different route to the regular car. "You'll notice all the carbon fibre inside is actually matte carbon rather than gloss," says Tom, which gives the cabin a properly purposeful, race-bred feel. Then come the details that make it his favourite part of the car: "My favourite detail is actually on the seats, where you get all this tricolore detailing on the perforated Alcantara." The same treatment carries onto the floor mats, and even the shift paddles are finished in tricolore. Every surface you touch reminds you which Pista you're sitting in.

Fact 6: The 488 Pista Piloti Gets a Full Carbon Fibre Rear Spoiler

Title: ferrari-488-pista-piloti-carbon-rear-spoiler-tricolore - Description: Ferrari 488 Pista Piloti full carbon fibre rear spoiler with hand-painted tricolore, rear three-quarter view

The Piloti-only full carbon fibre rear spoiler

"Another Piloti-only feature is this full carbon fibre rear spoiler, which was not available as an option on the regular Pista," Tom explains. This car also sits on 20-inch carbon fibre wheels and carries all the exterior carbon you would expect, and each Piloti was produced through Ferrari's Tailor Made department, which you can see confirmed on the car's spec plaque. "Even by Pista standards, these Pilotis are ridiculously high-spec," says Tom, and having spent time with this one, we wouldn't argue.

Fact 7: There Were Only Four Colours, and Nero Daytona Is the Hardest to Find

Title: ferrari-488-pista-piloti-nero-daytona-rear-three-quarter - Description: Nero Daytona Ferrari 488 Pista Piloti with tricolore livery and racing number 79, rear three-quarter view

Nero Daytona, one of only four Piloti colours

For a car built by Tailor Made, the Piloti came with a surprisingly short colour list. There were only four to choose from: Rosso Corsa, Argento Nürburgring, Blu Tour de France and Nero Daytona, the colour of this car. "From what I've seen in the market, the black ones are the hardest to find," says Tom, and the numbers back him up: of the 283 cars listed by the Exclusive Car Registry, an unofficial registry, just 30 are Nero Daytona, against 138 in Rosso Corsa. Against the deep black paint, the hand-painted tricolore looks genuinely dramatic. Is it the best of the four? We'll let you decide, though we know which way we lean.

How Many 488 Pista Piloti Were Made?

The tricolore runs down the lower sides of the car

This is where things get murky. Ferrari has never published an official production figure for the 488 Pista Piloti, and sources vary. "There are a lot of reports saying there were 40, but Ferrari never officially published a total," says Tom, "but there are certainly more than that figure would suggest." The Exclusive Car Registry, an unofficial registry that tracks individual cars, currently lists 283 Pista Pilotis and estimates production at around 300. What is clear is that the Piloti makes up a very small proportion of Pista production, and examples seldom come up for sale. When one does, people notice. A Rosso Corsa car sold at RM Sotheby's Miami auction in February for about £771,000 ($1,039,000), which, in Tom's words, "just goes to show that these are an entirely different category to regular Pistas."

Ferrari 488 Pista vs 488 GTB: Where the Piloti Fits

Title: ferrari-488-pista-piloti-carbon-fibre-wheel - Description: Ferrari 488 Pista Piloti 20-inch carbon fibre wheel with red brake calliper

20-inch carbon fibre wheels and red brake callipers

It helps to remember what the Piloti is built on. The standard 488 Pista was already a big step on from the 488 GTB, with 720 cv (710 bhp) against the GTB's 670 cv, around 90 kg less weight and 0-62 mph in 2.85 seconds against 3.0, on the way to 211 mph. Ferrari made no changes to the engine for the Piloti, so the performance is identical to any other Pista. What changes is everything you can see and touch: the hand-painted livery, the racing number on the doors and wheel, the matte carbon cabin with its tricolore details, the full carbon rear spoiler and the Tailor Made specification. The Pista is the driver's car. The Piloti is the driver's car with the race team's story attached.

The example in Tom's short is finished in Nero Daytona, with the hand-painted tricolore running from the nose, over the roof and down the sides, the FIA 2017 champion's laurel on the bonnet and number 79 on the doors and steering wheel. Add the carbon fibre wheels, the Piloti-only carbon rear spoiler, red brake callipers and the Tailor Made sill plates, and it's a textbook Piloti in the colour Tom rates as the hardest to find.
