The previous iteration of the Macan, released back in 2014, became one of Porsche's best selling models and the Turbo variant was especially sought after for its looks, practicality and driving dynamics. This new, re-worked model promises improved tech, styling and performance so let us delve deeper into the changes and updates the boffins at Porsche have served up for us in this new model.
In terms of exterior styling the outgoing Macan was one of the better-looking compact SUVs on the market and thus Porsche have been relatively subtle with their stylistic changes. The front sees a new front bumper and LED headlights now introduced as standard, whilst a new double slatted roof spoiler, fully integrated light bar and dual twin tailpipes give the rear of the car a more modern look on every level. Stepping inside, and the new Macan still manages to strike that fine balance between the feeling of a modern Porsche sports car and the lofty driving position that draws so many drivers to the SUV platform. A welcome update to the upper portion of the centre console includes a new wider touchscreen whilst the Sport Chrono Package unlocks the steering wheel mounted rotary mode switch first introduced on the 918 Spyder.
From a performance and engine standpoint Porsche have worked their magic again and somehow managed to squeeze an extra 39bhp out of a downsized 2.9L twin-turbo V6. 0 to 62mph is dealt with in 4.5 seconds, dropping to 4.3 when fitted with the Sport Chrono Package and engaging launch control, whilst a top speed of 167mph should be plenty for most. Another major technical innovation from Porsche on the new Macan Turbo is the introduction of Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB) as standard. These new discs are coated with an ultra-tough layer of tungsten carbide which not only reduces wear and increases braking performance but also give a clean look with their mirror finish. Overall the Macan Turbo picks up where it left off, asserting its claim as one the best compact performance SUVs on the market.
