The McLaren 650S is the facelifted 12C. Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2014, the 650S brings technology and styling elements borrowed from the P1 hypercar. This included a whole new front end with curved LED headlights, bigger air intakes and new carbon fibre details on the doors and inserts in the rear bumper. The car is also available in four new colours, more carbon fibre trim options, twin spoke lightweight forged alloys which are now standard. The 3.8 litre twin-turbo charged V8 engine has been fettled with to produced even more power and torque than before and the handling has been tweaked thanks to new tyres, stiffer spring rates and dampers and a revised ESP system.
The 650S is available as both a Coupe and Spider but comes with more equipment as standard. They are few cars that could keep up with the incredible pace of the McLaren 650S. Compared to the 12C, power is up from 616 bhp to 641 bhp. There is more torque too which is 500 lb ft; 101 lb ft of torque more than the naturally aspirated Ferrari 458 Speciale. Astonishingly, the 650S does 0-100 mph in just 5.7 seconds, which is only 0.7 seconds slower than the more powerful P1. On track there is more grip and downforce than you get from the 12C and the stiffer suspension makes it even more responsive.
Step inside and the interior comes with soft Alcantara lining on the dashboard, roof and seats which looks great and helps the car look more track oriented inside. New optional P1 based fixed-back racing bucket seats are fantastic and they also save 15 kg in weight. As ever, visibility is exceptional and whichever model you go for be it Coupe or Spider; the 650S remains an astonishing car. It is the supercar for all occasions. With it's incredible supple suspension that is extremely comfortable on long journeys but at the push of a button can be stiff enough to set incredible lap times; the 650S offers the best of both worlds and it is one of the world's best supercars.
