The Ferrari 550 was first produced in 1996 and marked Ferrari’s return of front engine, rear-wheel drive, naturally aspirated V12 2-seater vehicles. Along with the 550 came the 550 Barchetta in 2000, which was a roadster version of the 550 limited to 448 production models.
The Ferrari 550 is classed as a Grand Tourer and certainly fulfilled that label. The 550 has ample space and had also been given a 100-litre plus fuel tank, which allowed it to sit comfortably within this class. Despite this, power is still readily available from its 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine, which accompanied by a 6-speed manual gearbox pushes the car from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds.
The Ferrari 550 Barchetta commemorates the 70th anniversary of Pininfarina and being a ‘Barchetta’ (little boat in Italian) had no convertible top. The Barchetta featured differences distinguishing it from the original, with a windshield that sat lower to improve aerodynamics, roll-over hoops behind the seats for safety and unique 19-inch split rims.
