Audi’s beautiful A5 coupe was massively successful for the brand, and it was only fitting that they gave it the true sports performance to go with its chiselled muscle-car looks. In 2010, along came the Audi RS5, with a 444 horsepower V8 under the bonnet. The engine was in fact rumoured to have been derived from the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo’s 5.2 V10, with two cylinders removed – a good start for a model set to compete with the BMW M4 and Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe.
Of course, the Audi RS5’s USP was its permanent Quattro four-wheel drive, enabling drivers to really put down the full power on offer, even on a wet day. In 2012, a minor facelift included upgrades to the RS5’s suspension components as well as all-electric power steering; a cabriolet followed for in 2013.
In 2017 came the all-new Audi RS5 Coupe, with a 2.9-litre V6 twin-turbo shared with the RS4 Avant and indeed in the Porsche Panamera 4S of the time. Its new 8-speed ZF gearbox meant the RS5 could now achieve sub-4 second acceleration to 62mph. A new bodystyle, the 4-door RS5 Sportback was also introduced in 2018.
