Since the much-loved RS4 stopped production and now exists only as in Avant form, the RS5 has taken over as the supreme sports saloon in the Audi range. The RS5 first went for sale in 2010 initially only available as a coupe though a Cabrio version has now been released. Continuing in the tradition of the ‘RennSport’ name which literally translates into ‘Racing Sport’ the RS5 is a hardcore performance version of the Audi A5.
Like the iconic RS4 before it and the current R8 the car comes with a 4.2L V8 engine but most notably the RS5 was the first car to use Audi’s S-Tronic dual clutch transmission which provides super smooth gear changes. The combination of this produces what seems like effortless pace and when you add the brilliant Quattro 4WD system the RS5 quickly becomes a great all-rounder of a car. Superbly able in all weather conditions which provides blistering performance when you want it and relaxing comfortable long journeys or city driving.
There are only subtle styling differences between the RS5 and say the S5 or even the A5 and there is a real understated elegance to the car which makes it so appealing. The interior is first-rate as you would expect and comes with an abundance of modern Audi technology both in the standard specification and on the option list. Overall it is the terrific V8 engine which holds all the aces and where the aggression almost secretly lies within the car ready to burst it into life - the performance figures speak for themselves.
The RS range of Audi has always been a favourite of Romans and the RS5 in particular a car that Romans owner Paul Jaconelli is very fond of having used as his daily driver for over a year.
