The Ford GT40 is the epitome of the Ford Motor Company and its Racing heritage. The car was originally conceived in the early 60’s, as Henry Ford wanted to battle against Ferrari; a company who dominated the Le Mans race track from 1960 – 1965.
In 1964, the GT40 MK1’s had an unimpressive first outing at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, the benchmark in racing during that era. To rectify the situation Ford handed the Ford GT40 race project over to the now legendary Caroll Shelby (of the AC Cobra & Selby Cobra fame).
When the GT40 MKII made it’s return to Le Mans in 1966, it came equipped with a 7.0-litre V8 with 485bhp, with a recorded top speed of 187mph and weighed just over 1,100kg, due to its glass reinforced plastic body shell and its space frame chassis. The Ford GT40 didn’t just beat Ferrari it firmly made its mark on the Le Mans race track by winning victories in 1966, ‘67, ‘68 and ’69.
