Ferrari have unveiled a brand new version of its highly successful California model which wis expected to go on sale at Ferrari dealers late 2014.
Pictures of the new California T were revealed at the end of last week, with perhaps the defining feature being the new 3.8L Turbo V8 engine, which produces 552bhp – a considerable jump from the 490bhp offered by its predecessor. This extra power means that the refreshed California boasts more speed than ever before, with a 0-60mph time of 3.6 seconds trimming 0.2 seconds from the old model. Its top speed, meanwhile, is a respectable 190mph. This is an adjustment to the engine found in the current Maserati Quattroporte, meaning it’s a product which has already been tried and tested. It is the first time a Ferrari has featured a turbo since the iconic F40: another reason why the official release of the model is so hotly anticipated.
In many cases, added power tends to necessitate sacrificing efficiency, but it’s the exact opposite in the new California, with the turbocharge meaning that the model is 15 per cent more economical than its predecessor. It’s also a car which is environmentally conscious, with a new engine stop/start function at idle helping to improve the economy from 22mpg to 27mpg.
The tweaks under the bonnet are thought to have yielded incredible results, with Ferrari claiming that the California T offers the best sound of any turbo ever produced; it’s a statement which many critics will be eager to judge for themselves upon its release.
Expected to be officially revealed to the world at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March, the California T has kept with the same winning formula that made the California so successful with it’s 2+2 seating and hard top roof which retracts in just 14 seconds. The new version features a host of aesthetic changes, with the remodelled grille sporting a far angrier and more aggressive appearance than its predecessor. There are also adjustments to the headlights, which now spread out to the wings.
A great new feature of the California T is the Turbo Performance Engineer – a circular touch screen which comfortably slots between the centre air vents which allow the driver to access up to date engine information. This is combined with another 6.5inch touch screen which serves as a gateway to the infotainment system; this features conventional controls for ultimate ease of access. The California was the most aerodynamic Ferrari ever produced upon its arrival back in 2009, and the new triple slot rear diffuser helps to further increase the aerodynamics while also improving an aspect of the car which had previously divided opinion. There is also the inclusion of a new vented-grille, taking inspiration from celebrated models like the F12berlinetta and the FF.
The Ferrari California T is expected to arrive on forecourts in the autumn with a decent spec example expected to cost north of £175,000. Further details are sure to be made available following its appearance at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
