Mercedes-Benz can trace the company's early beginnings as far back as 1886, when Karl Benz's produced Benz Patent Motorwagen, which has widely been considered as the first petrol-powered automobile. The team again dominated the 1954 and 1955 race seasons with its winning combination of technical excellence and genius driving from its star drivers.
Since the early nineties Mercedes-Benz returned to motorsport and the prestigious Grand Prix championship and started as an engine supplier to teams like Sauber and McLaren, which saw the Mercedes powered race cars gaining podium finishes throughout the season.
Then in 1997 Formula One season David Coulthard produced victory for McLaren powered by a Mercedes-Benz engine. This was the start of a hugely successful partnership between McLaren and Mercedes-Benz, as they achieved world championship wins for Mika Hakkinen, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button to date.
